The Alberta Shooting Stars Basketball
program is one of the longest running club programs in Alberta having been
formed in 1990.
Mandate
The Alberta Shooting Stars mission is to develop, showcase and promote girls
basketball in Alberta.
The Shootings Stars run the following
programs:
Provincial Girls All Star Games
This year marks the 12th year for the Provincial All Star games. In 1994,
the event started with two Provincial all star games: one game involved grade 12
players from A/2A schools and the other game involved 3A/4A players. Both
games were played in a North/South format.
The next year, the 3A and 4A games were divided into separate games which
continues to this day.
In 1999, the event was expanded to include younger players from Calgary and
area. These were the "Prospects" games and involved players from
grades 9 through 11. In 2005, we expanded the Prospects game to include
players from outside the Calgary area.
All games in this event have been played at the SAIT campus center. We thank
Coach Avery Harrison and the SAIT Athletic Department for their co-operation.
The facility recently went through a half million dollar renovation in
preparation for the hosting of the CCAA Women's Basketball Nationals so we are
excited to be in this newly renovated facility for the first time this year.
This year we will have 4 Prospects games and three senior all star games with
over 150 participants.
To participate in these games, athletes are nominated by their coaches and then
they are invited to play.
Development Camps
Player development camps have been run by the club usually in the fall
spring and summer.
Spring/summer Club Teams
The Shooting Stars have put teams in numerous spring leagues and play in a
number of spring and summer tournaments. Over the years, the club has
traveled to tournaments in B.C., Texas, Arizona, California, Washington, Oregon
, Colorado and Hawaii.
