Ashley Ashman commits to the Dinos

CALGARY – University of Calgary Dinos women’s basketball coach Shawnee Harle announced today her first recruit for the 2008-09 season – Airdrie, Alta.’s Ashley Ashman out of Bert Church High School.

A 5’10” power forward, Ashman will bring impressive speed and power to the Dinos. With her remarkable athleticism, she plays tenacious defence and has the potential to be a force under the glass. “Ashley is exactly what we are looking for in our Dinos program,” said Harle. “She is a tremendous athlete who runs the floor and defends and rebounds like crazy. Most importantly, she is a winner in all areas of her life and she is a team player.

“I am thrilled she has chosen to join Dinos Basketball and I look forward to all she will bring to the table over the next five years.”

Ashman is currently in grade 12 at Bert Church and will enroll at the University of Calgary in fall 2008. She hopes to enter the Haskayne School of Business. The reigning athlete of the year at her high school and Rockyview league MVP, Ashman is a five-year veteran of various provincial teams.  She was the youngest athlete in history to be named to the provincial midget team at 12, spending three years with that program. Ashman spent the last two summers with the juvenile provincial team, winning bronze and silver medals at the 2006 and 2007 national championships.

Not only does she excel in basketball, but she is an accomplished track and field athlete as well, winning a provincial silver medal in the 100m dash each of the last two years. She also placed fourth in the shot put at the provincial level.

“I love intense play and hard defence,” Ashman said. “I really like the style of play of the Dinos because it is fast and aggressive.” Ashman had the opportunity to play with several of the Dinos on a spring league team, and that experience contributed to her decision to join the squad. “I got to see the girls throughout spring ball and they are a group that I would like to be around for the next five years,” she said.

“Over the past four years, Ashley has developed all the qualities necessary to succeed at the CIS level,” said Bert Church head coach Doug Wilde.  “Her basketball fundamentals speak for themselves. She is as comfortable with her perimeter skills as she is with her inside game, and she is a remarkable competitor who will do anything necessary to get the result.”
